Bach Chorales for Saxophone Quartet

$25.00

The repertoire of the saxophone quartet has many wonderful pieces spanning a wide range of genres, yet the saxophone, being a relatively young instrument (patented in 1846), misses out on a vast majority of music history.  If only history’s greats could have heard the power, versatility, and sweet tone of the saxophone.  Fortunately, we can still learn from these master composers through transcriptions of their works.  Regardless of the instrument a piece was originally written for, we should always be trying to play great music.  The focus of this book is the study and practice of Johann Sebastian Bach’s four-part chorales transcribed for saxophone quartet.  By studying Bach, the saxophonist is exposed to one of the brightest thinkers in the development of tonal harmony.  Experiencing the way each voice pulls and tugs against the others as tension is built and finally released at each cadence will help to develop the harmonic ear of the saxophonist as well as developing other essential ensemble skills. There are 371 four-part chorales collected from Bach’s various cantatas, motets, passions, oratorios, and liturgical music.  The 25 chorales presented in this book have been selected for their harmonic and melodic beauty, as well as their pedagogical value.
